TFW you just can&#8217;t escape image manipulation&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last week I had the great pleasure of visiting <a href=\"https:\/\/md.rcm.upr.edu\/physiology\/dt_team\/dr-sabzali-javadov\/\">Sabzali Javadov<\/a> at the University of Puerto Rico, to participate in the PhD thesis defense of Rebecca Parodi-Rullan (Rebecca had spent some time in my lab a few years ago on an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfrbm.org\">SfRBM<\/a> mini-felowship).\u00a0 She passed (yay!) and is off to start a post-doc at NYU soon.\u00a0 Here&#8217;s a picture of Dr. Javadov&#8217;s awesome lab group, who I greatly enjoyed meeting with and discussing science:<a href=\"https:\/\/psblab.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/IMG_20181214_160232.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-607\" src=\"https:\/\/psblab.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/IMG_20181214_160232-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/psblab.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/IMG_20181214_160232-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/psblab.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/IMG_20181214_160232-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/psblab.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/IMG_20181214_160232-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/psblab.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/IMG_20181214_160232-400x300.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>But, as often happens during such visits, there was some down-time, so I found myself waiting in a corridor outside someone&#8217;s lab.\u00a0 What else is there to do but read a poster?<\/p>\n<p>Well, let&#8217;s just say the poster had some &#8220;imaginative approaches to the re-use of loading controls on western blots&#8221;.\u00a0 I snapped a cellphone pic of the author banner and decided to pull some papers when I got home.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/psblab.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/Banerjee-Duplications.pdf\">Here<\/a> is what I found. Ugh!\u00a0 Details are posted on PubPeer <a href=\"https:\/\/pubpeer.com\/publications\/A75237077CFAAF9CFB038D342A98FD#1\">here<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/pubpeer.com\/publications\/17D676A4AF6F20A11C0E8669C4AED4#1\">here<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/pubpeer.com\/publications\/0E0067E391A6D53CAC959E8DE797ED#1\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/pubpeer.com\/publications\/5F981D220FEDC49C222647957AF8E8#1\">here<\/a>, for those of you who don&#8217;t want to download a PDF with all the details.\u00a0 Essentially it&#8217;s mutiple examples of images being re-used across 9 different papers spanning 2004-2018, all from a single PI&#8217;s lab &#8211; <a href=\"https:\/\/md.rcm.upr.edu\/biochemistry\/dt_team\/dr-dipak-k-banerjee\/\">Dipak K. Banerjee<\/a> in the Department of Biochemistry at UPR (Dr. Banerjee is the only author common to all 9 papers). He was and is funded by NIH, and some of the papers fall within the ORI 6 year statute of limitations. Thus, ORI has been informed, as have all the journal editors, and <a href=\"https:\/\/publicationethics.org\/\">COPE<\/a> (since all the journals are COPE members).<\/p>\n<p>This sucks!\u00a0 What should otherwise have been an enoyable trip now leaves a sour after-taste. Scientific misconduct never sleeps, it just keeps following me into the most unlikely places. When you&#8217;ve seen it once, it&#8217;s impossible not to see it everywhere you look.
