{"id":809,"date":"2024-03-22T20:25:22","date_gmt":"2024-03-22T20:25:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/psblab.org\/?p=809"},"modified":"2024-03-22T20:25:22","modified_gmt":"2024-03-22T20:25:22","slug":"spring-24-update","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/psblab.org\/?p=809","title":{"rendered":"Spring &#8217;24 Update"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Lots of happenings in the lab since last fall:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Grad&#8217; student Rahiim Lake (Biochem Grad Program) joined in summer 2023 and is getting up to speed on his project looking at MGO modification targets in mitochondria.<\/li>\n<li>New Post-Doc&#8217; Sabarna Chowdhury arrived from India in January and is learning the various methods of the lab.\u00a0 Sabarna is a zebrafish biologist by training, but also a bona fide mitochondriac!\u00a0 She will (hopefully) be attending the CSHL course on metabolomics this summer.<\/li>\n<li>Our paper on ROS generation by reverse electron transfer at complex I was published in <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/38295577\/\">Redox Biology<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Paul is now back on the Faculty Senate&#8217;s Research Policy Committee (RPC), which this year will be reviewing several policies including the one on research misconduct. Yummy!<\/li>\n<li>We continue to fight misinformation and bad science, especially in the field of mitochondrial biology.\u00a0 Most recently this has included calling out a <a href=\"https:\/\/pubpeer.com\/publications\/44E0A3184152998F9528B49558ABA3\">truly awful study<\/a> claiming that mitochondria can communicate with each other across distances of centimeters by using photons!<\/li>\n<li>A successful Biochemistry retreat was held, in which we hosted <a href=\"https:\/\/ubwp.buffalo.edu\/bme-avml\/\">Rita Alevriadou<\/a> from University of Buffalo, who gave a fascinating talk on mitochondria inside extracellular vesicles.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Lots of happenings in the lab since last fall: Grad&#8217; student Rahiim Lake (Biochem Grad Program) joined in summer 2023 and is getting up to speed on his project looking at MGO modification targets in mitochondria.
